The Story Behind It: A Free Printable for When You’re Letting Go of Stuff (But Not the Memories)

Some seasons are about adding things to our lives. And then there are seasons where you start asking, “What can I let go of?”

I'm in one of those seasons right now. I'm downsizing into a small space on my son's property, and every box I've packed has forced the same question: keep it, or let it go?

Somewhere in the middle of that, I started grabbing an index card before I packed anything sentimental. Just a few lines. What it was, why it mattered. Not a journal entry, just enough so the story didn't get thrown away with the stuff.

That's how The Story Behind It cards started.

What Is The Story Behind It Card?

It's a free printable card system. Each card has five short questions about one object:

What is it?
Where did it come from?
Why did you keep it?
The story behind it
Who should have this someday?

Pick one object. Answer the five questions. That's it, ten minutes, one memory saved.

Small item? Slip the card and the object into a bag so they stay together. Bigger item? Take a photo of it with the card and save them side by side.

Why We Need It

You don't have to be downsizing to lose the stories behind your things. Most of us have a drawer, a closet, a box in the garage full of objects nobody's ever asked about. This is a small, low-pressure way to change that, one item at a time.
