As we navigate life after 40, one of the most rewarding parts can be connecting with the next generation—our grandkids. But staying close to them often means stepping outside our comfort zones and embracing new ways of bonding. Technology might feel like a hurdle at first, but it can actually become a bridge that strengthens our relationships.
Project: Improve Me is all about growing, adapting, and finding joy in this phase of life. Learning how to connect with tech-savvy grandkids is a perfect example of how we can embrace change and reinvent ourselves to build stronger family ties. By stepping into their world, we create lasting memories and deepen our bond with them.

I never thought I’d be my grandson’s first contact on his Amazon tablet, but here we are. Nearly every day, I get a video call from him with a cheerful “Good morning, Mimi!” And while he’s still learning that he can’t just hang up without saying goodbye, we’re making progress. Now, before the screen goes black, I hear a quick, “I love you, bye-bye!” and it’s enough to keep my heart full all day.
Moments like these remind me that if we want to stay close to our grandkids, we have to meet them where they are—and that means embracing technology.
For many grandparents, technology feels like a barrier. We see our grandkids glued to their screens and wonder, Why aren’t they outside like we were? But times have changed. Instead of fighting the digital world, what if we used it to bring us closer together?
When I was raising my son, I didn’t want to memorize all the Pokémon names or watch WWE every Friday night, but I did it because I wanted to stay connected. It gave us something to talk about, something to laugh over. Now, my grandkids are still tiny, but I know the same concept applies. Except instead of Pokémon cards, it’s apps, video calls, and whatever new digital trend comes next.
How to Bridge the Digital Gap (and Make It Fun!)
If you want to connect with your grandkids (without forcing them to abandon their beloved screens), here are some easy ways to embrace technology and strengthen your bond:
Get Comfortable with Video Calls
FaceTime, Zoom, WhatsApp—whatever they use, learn it. But here’s the trick: don’t just use it for chatting. Read them a bedtime story, do silly filters together, or let them show you their latest favorite toy. Video calls can be more than just “Hi, how are you?”
Play Games—Even If You’re Terrible at Them
If they love a certain game, ask them to teach you. It could be something simple like an online puzzle or a silly mobile game. They’ll love watching you struggle (grandparent bonus points if you exaggerate your confusion just a little).
Ask About Their Favorite Shows and Apps
Right now, my grandkids are obsessed with certain kids’ shows, and I try to keep up. Even if it means learning all the words to a theme song I’ll never get out of my head. Show interest in what they love—it’s an easy way to connect.
Send Quick Videos or Voice Messages
A text is fine, but a short video or voice message? Way better. Try sending a goofy message like, “Guess what I had for breakfast today?” or “I just saw a squirrel doing something ridiculous.” Kids love random, silly things.
Use Tech to Share Family Memories
Even little kids can appreciate old photos and videos. Start a shared album and add pictures of them as babies, their parents as kids, or funny moments from family gatherings. Let them help “heart” their favorites.
Let Them Be the Tech Teacher
If they’re using a new app or playing a game you don’t understand, ask them to explain it. Kids love to feel like experts. The more you engage with their world, the more they’ll engage with you.
Create a “Digital Treasure Hunt”
Set up a simple scavenger hunt using photos, emojis, or clues sent through messaging apps. For example, send a clue like, “Find something blue and send me a picture of it!” Kids love these quick, interactive games that spark their imagination.

Use Virtual Stickers and Rewards
Kids love rewards! Find apps that let you send virtual stickers, badges, or even stars. You can create a fun game out of it: “You get three stickers if you show me your favorite book over video chat!”
Respect Their Digital Space
The quickest way to make a kid shut down? Complain about their screen time or try to take their tablet away. Instead of fighting their love for tech, find ways to integrate yourself into it.
Set Up “Tech Time” Dates
Even tiny kids love routine. Pick a weekly time where you do something tech-related together, whether it’s FaceTime storytelling, playing a game, or watching a funny YouTube clip.
Keep Learning
Technology changes fast, but staying curious keeps us young. AI, smart devices, new apps—if they’re using it, why not try it out? Your grandkids will love that you’re willing to explore their world.
At the end of the day, staying connected to our grandkids isn’t about becoming a tech genius—it’s about showing up in their world. And sometimes, that means answering a video call, only to be greeted by their forehead and the sound of cartoons in the background. And honestly? That’s pretty special, too.
