This Week’s Pen Your Past Prompt

Write a letter to a car, truck, bike, RV, or any ride that carried you through life.
Let yourself remember the road trips, the breakdowns, the music, the people who sat beside you. Tell it what it meant to you. The good and bad.

And here’s the thing: most of us have more than one car (or ride) story. Maybe your first beater, the van that hauled kids to practices, and the dream car you finally bought later in life. This prompt doesn’t have to be a one-time memory. Come back to it anytime you want to capture another story from the road.

Why This Might Be Worth Writing About

For many of us, vehicles weren’t just transportation. They were stages for family conversations, backdrops for teenage independence, or even status symbols of the era (I still hear people born in the ’50s and ’60s reminiscing about their first muscle cars).

Writing a letter to your old ride helps you capture not just where you went — but who you were becoming along the way.

If You’re Not Sure Where to Begin…

Here are a few ideas to help get you started:

  • What was your very first car, and why did you choose it?
  • Who rode with you most often — and what conversations happened there?
  • Did your vehicle ever surprise you (a breakdown, a dent, or a funny mishap)?
  • What music, food wrappers, or quirks made it uniquely “yours”?
  • How did you feel the day you said goodbye to it?
✨ You don’t have to write a book to tell your story.
Just start with one small memory — and let it count.

My Life, One Story at a Time [A Letter to My Trusty Durango]

Dear Durango,

I found you at a turning point in my life. I moved to Georgia, with no family, friends, or job; set on a new adventure with my 12 year old son by my side. Two weeks after moving there, I landed a pretty good job, which led me to be able to come and find you. You didn’t have a whole lot of miles, you were practically a new car, which was a first for me. I chose you for a few reasons: you were in my price range, you were beautiful dark blue, and most importantly, my now 13-year old son was already around 6 feet tall and we needed some space!

You became more than a car. You became our moving living room, our safe place, and sometimes even my therapy session on wheels. Countless conversations filled your seats. I know my son probably felt “trapped” at times, but I loved those talks. He learned to drive in you — with me setting up cones in empty parking lots until he got the hang of it.

You wore your own stories too: the baseball-sized dent from a foul ball at his game, the power windows that eventually gave up (and the trash bags I used to cover them), and all the miles of laughter, worry, and everyday life you carried.

After 11 years, I finally traded you in for the Dodge Charger I had always wanted. Cooler, faster, and yes, even a little more expensive. But no car will ever hold the same chapter of my life that you did. This car hasn’t even seen my son much, so it definitely doesn’t feel the same as you did. You weren’t just transportation. You were a witness to the years I was figuring out motherhood, independence, and resilience all at once.

Thank you for keeping us safe and always getting us from A to B, sometimes to C, too.

Love,
Kari

Looking Ahead

Almost everyone has a car story. Writing it down isn’t really about the vehicle — it’s about capturing the voices, the music, the places, and the moments that made that season of life yours.

With Love,
Kari 💚
