This Week’s Pen Your Past Prompt

What’s in your purse right now — and what does that say about you?

  • Do you carry everything just in case? Or are you more minimalist?
  • What’s something in your bag that tells a story?
  • Do you ever find something unexpected, like a note, receipt, or momento that takes you back?
  • Has your purse changed as your life changed?

📸 For fun, you can dump everything out of your bag and take a picture of the contents to add to the story.

Why This Might Be Worth Writing About

Your purse might seem like just a bag, but it often holds little clues about your values, your priorities, and your daily life.

Whether it’s a purse, a diaper bag, a tote, or even your car console, there’s a story in what you carry. Writing it down might help you see something about who you are right now—or who you used to be.

If You’re Not Sure Where to Begin…

Start with the basics:

  • What kind of purse or bag do you use?
  • What are the top 3 things in there — and why?
  • What does your bag say about your season of life?
  • Are you a “bag swapper,” or do you use the same one forever?

Then move to reflection:

  • What’s the one thing you always make sure is with you?
  • What’s something you wish you didn’t have to carry anymore?
  • Have you ever lost your purse or had to start over?

My Life, One Story at a Time

Right now, my purse isn’t too exciting — but it says a lot about how I live these days.

First, I make sure it’s big enough to hold my iPad. That’s non-negotiable.
My grandkids love playing games on my tablet, so I always double check that it’s charged before I head over.
That iPad has become a “Mimi essential.”

Other than that, it’s simple:

  • My wallet with my debit card, driver’s license, and insurance cards.
  • A couple of receipts floating around from the last time I left the house (which doesn’t happen often!).
  • And two Burt’s Bees chapsticks — because I’m picky and sensitive to most lip products. That one kind is the only one I love and trust, so I keep extras on hand.

I used to carry a lot more — especially when my son was little — but these days, it’s all about staying light and having what matters.

✨ Looking Ahead

Next week’s post will be a bit more reflective — and a little surprising. You’ll be invited to write about something you never planned on… but that turned out to shape your life.

Until then — keep writing, even if it’s just a little. You never know what small memory might turn into a story that matters.
